Dr. Bowlby, our Chief of Staff, joined the Merrifield Animal Hospital team in March 2015. She grew up in Clearwater, Florida. At a very young age, Dr. Bowlby knew she wanted to be a veterinarian and was always surrounded by animals — dogs, cats, an iguana, a cockatiel, hedgehog, frogs, fish, rabbits and gerbils. She attended the University of Central Florida in Orlando, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She then went on to receive a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University.
Throughout undergraduate and veterinary studies, Dr. Bowlby worked as a technician in both small animal and equine veterinary hospitals. After graduating from veterinary school in 2011, she accepted a position at a very busy practice in El Paso, Texas where she treated cats, dogs and small pocket pets.
In 2014, Dr. Bowlby moved to Virginia with her husband and daughter. They live with their 9-year-old cat, Lily, and three dogs: Persia, a 5-year-old mastiff; Georgie, a 9-year-old french bulldog; and Penny, a 3-year-old miniature dachshund.
Dr. Bowlby loves dentistry and parasitology. She also enjoys challenging internal medicine cases and soft tissue surgery. She has a soft spot for bulldogs and other brachycephalic breeds (whom she lovingly calls "smushies" for their flat faces), and she is always happy to receive bulldog kisses! When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her family. Her hobbies include painting, cooking and baking.
